Alcohol Rehab Center in the USA – What Can You Expect?

Alcoholism and alcohol abuse have long been recognized as among America’s most serious social problems. According to data from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, approximately one in every twelve adult Americans abuse alcohol or suffer from alcohol dependency. But the worst affected by alcohol problems are the youth – alcohol abuse and dependency is most prevalent among young adults aged 18 to twenty-nine. Alcoholism has also long been acknowledged as a disease that can best be treated in the structured environment provided by an alcohol rehab center in the USA.

There are three components to the treatment of alcoholism in an alcohol rehab center in the USA:

Detoxification involves weaning the alcoholic away from alcohol dependency while managing withdrawal symptoms. Some treatment centers offer in-house detoxification while others require patients to undergo detox before they check in to the center. The withdrawal process is usually done on an inpatient basis at a specialized facility.

Education is the core component of all treatment programs and is aimed at getting the alcoholic to face his or her addiction squarely and changing their attitude towards their alcohol abuse. Patients are taught about alcoholism as a disease and the dynamics of addiction.

Patients at a rehabilitation facility will also receive individual counseling and may also participate in group therapy sessions. These sessions are intended to teach you the skills you will need to avoid relapsing back into alcoholism.

These components are supplemented by family meetings in which other family members are also educated about alcohol addiction and how they can help the alcoholic in the recovery process.

Typically, the rehabilitation program lasts twenty-eight days, and is followed up by aftercare programs which may include outpatient treatment, stays at a halfway house, counseling and regular attendance at twelve-step meetings.
